Cultivating a Daily Spiritual Practice

This is something that some of us are looking to implement in our lives and have perhaps tried before.

It should be fairly simple to set aside some time to cultivate a daily spiritual practice but for some reason I am sure you have noticed that there are so many obstacles that form themselves and prevent you from sitting down to honor the most precious part of you! SPIRIT.

When you are trying to "better" yourself or change a habit in some way or other you will always encounter a challenge. It doesn't matter what it is.

Somehow it will seem so difficult to get to this new task, new idea, new way of life.

I am sure you can relate.

Spirituality is no different and maybe even more demanding of ourselves when living in the Kali Yuga (the Iron Age) that we find ourselves in today.

Spirituality is not that popular.

So we may find ourselves going against the current, against the flow of others! Which will require even more of a firm belief in what we want, more creativity so we can activate this spiritual daily practice in our lives, and a desire for truth or the Divine within or both.

Many years ago, when I was in my early 20s, I had this strong desire to find the truth. I never employed the word God because the God I had learned about through Catholicism was fake and seemed pretty evil in my experience.

I wanted nothing to do with this God!

I left for New York City as soon as I got the opportunity to fulfill a dream I had since childhood (about 8 years old).

It was the perfect set up for me filled with lots of challenges, experiences of all kinds (good and bad), and lots of different spiritual doctrines to choose from.

Church was out of the question for me but alternative approaches to God were so plentiful that I delved into the practice of yoga and the many Gurus that walked this earth before. This was a full on education that took lot's of effort yet it was irresistible to me.

I needed this like I needed the air to breathe each day.

To survive in NYC you have to find a way to RELAX and to reconvene within.

Those who don't burn out in 3 months! I've seen it many times while living there for 18 years.

Fast forward to today, I have cultivated a daily spiritual practice for the last 30 years. It certainly has evolved over time. As we change our needs change.

And I am so grateful for all the teachers I have come across along the years that have helped me stay focused and give me new tools to learn and emerge spiritually.

It is work in progress. And like Lao Tzu’s proverb says: "The Journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step".

The key is to start.
